There are so many opportunities to surprise your significant other during the holidays. First, think about whether you’d like to propose surrounded by others, or in a more private setting. Keep in mind what your boyfriend/girlfriend would want most: Should their parents be present? Their best friends? Or would they prefer a special moment just between the two of you? For an intimate engagement, consider proposing while picking out a Christmas tree, attending a tree-lighting ceremony, or in a beautifully lit gazebo in their favorite place. Location is important for setting the perfect mood, so take some time to think about the place that will make your proposal special and memorable.

The next important step is planning the behind-the-scenes logistics. It’s important to find a photographer that can capture the ideal photos you have in mind to help you remember this special day. If you have a certain picture you’d like to recreate or an idea for the moment of reveal, don’t be afraid to voice it to your photographer! Make sure you and your photographer agree on the best ways to capture the perfect angles in your location. Some private locations can make it tricky for your photographer to stay hidden in the background beforehand, so visiting your spot with your photographer before the big day will help ensure a smooth proposal. Using a videographer can also be a great way to capture your proposal. Planning the details with everyone involved in a great way to make sure the photographer, videographer, and anyone else that will be present is one the same page.

When it comes time for you to propose, don’t panic! Plan what you want to say while you’re down on one knee and practice a few times. You might be good at ‘just winging it’, but it’s a good idea to at least have an idea of how you’ll profess your love. It’s likely that something might go wrong, but as long as it doesn’t majorly affect your engagement, it’s okay. If you’re planning on being outside, check the weather the day of to make sure you can still execute your plan. Snow flurries? Beautiful and romantic. A blizzard? Freezing and possibly dangerous. If you have to change a small aspect of your plan, it’s no big deal. However, if it seems like too many things are going wrong, it might be best to save your proposal for another day when things are on track and you can surprise your sweetheart with the perfect moment. Above all else, have fun on this amazing and exciting day that you’ll both remember for the rest of your lives!
